What is Ruqyah?
Ruqyah is a type of spiritual healing accepted by the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. The Prophet ﷺ said, “There is nothing wrong with Ruqyah as long as it does not involve shirk.” (Sahih Muslim 2200).
About Ruqyah
Ruqyah is a spiritual healing practice that uses words—often Qur’anic verses—recited to remove harm or invite healing. It bridges the spiritual and physical realms, traditionally through recitation, blowing, or using physical media like water. It can be Qur’anic or non-Qur’anic, and aims to address ailments caused by spiritual forces such as evil eye, jinn, or black magic.
According to the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), ruqyah must follow two key principles:
- It must not involve associating partners with God.
- It should be done with compassion, helping others out of love and care.
The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: “Present to me your Ruqyahs. There is nothing wrong with Ruqyah so long as it does not involve shirk.” [Muslim, Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah]
Jabir (RA) reported “The Prophet (SAW) permitted ruqyah for the evil eye and stings. Then he said: ‘Whoever among you can benefit his brother, let him do so.’” [Sahih Muslim]

“Ruqyah is a spiritual healing practice using words to seek protection, relief, and well-being.”
Ruqyah Evolution
Since the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), Ruqyah techniques have evolved. For example, there is no explicit hadith that shows the practice of reciting Quranic verses into water for healing, nor is there any explicit evidence that wudhu’ must be taken when having ruqyah done, however ruqyah practitioners have discovered these to be useful techniques at times.
Research and Development (R&D) in ruqyah is essential for several reasons:
- Enhancing Spiritual Healing: Just as advancements in conventional medicine have improved physical health, R&D in ruqyah can lead to more effective spiritual healing methods. By exploring and developing new techniques within the boundaries of Islamic principles, practitioners can better address the spiritual ailments of individuals.
- Preserving and Revitalising Practices: Without ongoing innovation, ruqyah risks becoming stagnant or forgotten. Continuous research ensures that ruqyah remains a relevant and vital aspect of spiritual well-being, preventing it from being overshadowed by contemporary medical practices that may dismiss the spiritual realm.
- Aligning with Prophetic Tradition: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) approved the use of ruqyah practices from pre-Islamic cultures, provided they did not involve shirk (associating partners with Allah). This indicates an openness to beneficial innovations in spiritual practices. Therefore, engaging in R&D for ruqyah aligns with this Prophetic precedent, allowing for the integration of effective methods that adhere to Islamic teachings.
- Clarifying Misconceptions: Some individuals fear that any innovation (bid’ah) in spiritual practices is impermissible. However, it’s important to distinguish between innovations that contradict core Islamic principles and those that enhance understanding and application of the faith. Thoughtful R&D in ruqyah can help clarify these distinctions, ensuring that beneficial practices are not mistakenly rejected.
In summary, R&D in ruqyah is vital for the progression and effectiveness of spiritual healing, ensuring that it remains a dynamic and integral part of holistic well-being within the framework of Islamic teachings.

“Higher Ruqyah: Combining traditional Quranic healing with modern approaches for enhanced spiritual well-being.”
And We send down of the Qur’an that which is healing and mercy for the believers… [but it does not increase the wrongdoers except in loss]. Su’rah Al-Isra (17:82)

Higher Ruqyah
Higher Ruqyah refers to advanced, research-driven techniques developed beyond traditional ruqyah practices. It integrates deeper Qur’anic knowledge with an understanding of spiritual anatomy and physical illness. The focus is on efficacy, often using innovative methods—such as merging ruqyah into elements and tailored recitations—to produce stronger, sometimes miraculous, healing outcomes.
The 7 Levels of Ruqyah
The 7 Levels of Ruqyah were developed to systematically enhance and innovate ruqyah practices within the boundaries of Islamic teachings. This structured approach aims to deepen understanding and improve healing outcomes by building upon foundational techniques and progressively introducing more advanced methods.
The levels are as follows:
Level 1: Basic Recitation
Level 2: Specific Recitation
Level 3: Ruqyah Fusion
Level 4: Hands of Ruqyah
Level 5: Ruqyah of the Spiritual Organs
Level 6: Elemental Ruqyah
Level 7: Ruqyah Outside Space and Time
By progressing through these levels, practitioners aim to achieve greater efficacy in spiritual healing, addressing both common and complex ailments. This framework encourages continuous learning and adaptation, ensuring that ruqyah remains a dynamic and effective practice in the modern era.
